We provide help, hope, and a home to men facing homelessness in Charleston
Our Focus
Founded in 1904, Star Gospel Mission is Charleston’s oldest independent faith-based charity, and today it continues to extend a hand up through Christ’s love to people struggling with economic, emotional, spiritual and physical hardships.
We provide transitional housing options for men facing homelessness and strive to prove that a man’s worst moment is not the sum of his life. We provide counseling, training, and other services to equip our guests to become productive, interdependent members of the Charleston community.
We also respond to the needs of the community by offering emergency assistance to individuals and families struggling to survive in our community.
Most importantly, we offer hope through the Gospel of Jesus Christ to anyone who is seeking spiritual transformation.
OUR MAIN SERVICES
Men's
Lodge
Our resident program provides men with overnight shelter for six months or more. Guests of our 22-bed stability shelter also have access to case management.
Men's Transitional
Housing
Mission Guests who have gained stability through our Lodge may qualify for one of our transitional apartments. This prepares men for independent living; they pay a small monthly rent for six months, while building their savings and rebuilding their credit.
Emergency Outreach Assistance
Families in Charleston, Berkeley, and Dorchester counties receive help from our social services team throughout the year, along with gift cards during the holiday season through the Good Cheer Fund.
Then and Now
With the help of our donors, we have renovated two historic Charleston homes on Nassau Street to provide affordable and transitional housing. In addition to our main dormitory, these structures contain four studio apartments each for men who have successfully navigated their way through the Mission and are ready for their next step in life.
It is the Mission’s vision to construct additional structures on our campus to serve as affordable transitional and permanent housing. With the continued generous support of the community, we hope to make this a reality.
